The need
- The need for clinical and translational research in urology — and the opportunities to improve patient care — have never been greater. Unfortunately, a flat-line National Institutes of Health budget and declining reimbursements for clinical services are making it increasingly difficult for traditional university and medical school-based research units to meet this need.
- While for-profit pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have been responsible for many advances in urologic care, inherent conflicts between their financial performance and societal benefits require us to look to alternative mechanisms to support urologic research.
Addressing the need
- To help address some of the unmet needs in urologic research, the Vanguard Urologic Research Foundation was established as a not-for-profit research organization.
- It exists within the Vanguard Urologic Institute and benefits immensely from its association with the Memorial Hermann Hospital and the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences at UT Health Science Center, Houston. Our researchers also maintain research affiliations with the key academic institutions in the Texas Medical Center, including M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas Medical School -Houston, and Baylor College of Medicine, allowing collaboration with the best and the brightest minds, regardless of institutional affiliation.
- The Vanguard Urologic Research Foundation is supported by federal agencies, private foundations, industry, and — most importantly — philanthropy.
